Sustainability...

Being a business with strong ethics is always going to be an ongoing project.

I'm asked regularly what it means to be "sustainable".

The dictionary definition of sustainable is:

1. able to continue over a period of time.

2. causing, or made in a way that causes, little or no damage to an environment and therefore able to continue for a long time.

Bringing this into our business and having it as a core fundamental principle to the business allows us to make decisions clearly for both ourselves and you as a client that the practices and products within our business are the cleanest and least damaging we can use as a professional salon, with techniques used to allow you to enjoy your hair style for longer.

Product Sustainability

The research of what we use in the salon, and what we bring into the salon for use, ranging from shampoos and styling products, to refreshments, to clothes worn by the hairdressers, is a major part of our business.

Not only do we check the manufacturing of the products and the ingredients, we also look at what happens to these ingredients once they are washed away down the sinks. Sustainability is about maintaining the balance of the environment, not just the way things are made.

Financial Sustainability

Hairdressing today is a very different service to 20 years ago and longer. The advent of more advanced tools and products means that you as a client are able to look after your hair easier at home.

During the Victorian and Georgian eras, people didn't have a lot of access to hairdressers and barbers and this meant that stylists had to create cuts that lasted 12 weeks or longer. Tapping into that knowledge, and creating a modern haircut with techniques from history means you wont need to come to the salon nearly as often as usual.

The biggest problem facing salons and clients today is the waste we produce.

Salons prodcue a lot of waste that can have a negative impact on the environemt and on you, and there are companies that are paid to look after this for them. We don't agree with that, and our philosophy is that we take responsibility for the waste we produce ourselves, not leave it to someone else to sort out.

This allows us to look at what comes into our salon versus what leaves, and we can say that our waste is minimal.

We don't use foil, we reuse or repurpose most of our waste and we compost everything that we can.
